Drawn to Death Review

Drawn to Death is a third-person shooter combined with a brawler arena multiplayer released for PS4 on April 4th, 2017. It was developed by David Jaffe’s studio The Bartlet Jones Supernatural Detective Agency (@OfficialBartlet) and it was published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. Right out of the gate, Drawn to Death is an assault on your senses. Alternative rock blasts in your ears as a mess of lines and scratched out pages fill your screen. It’s loud, vulgar, angry and sometimes a little bit fun- once you get past being called a “dick” for the 100th time. With a broad range of characters, guns, modes and maps it might be worth wading through the crudeness to play. That said, there’s a lot to push past to enjoy Drawn to Death and I pushed past it so you might not have to. Continue reading

My Love/Hate Relationship with Uncharted 4

I have a love/hate relationship with Uncharted 4. For me, Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception is one of the greatest games of all time and I stand by that. I was unbelievably hyped for Uncharted 4 since I saw that very first trailer at PSX 2013. In the ensuing 3 years of waiting and getting more excited, I eventually reached a point where it could never live up to my expectations. Shakespeare’s Othello is one of the earliest and most successful plays starring a character of colour in the history of Western theatre. It’s a tragic tale of one man’s love for a woman who is prohibited from returning his love based on their different skin colour. It’s also one of the earliest and most famous examples of blackface, as this most famous character of colour was not played by a black man but a white man, wearing black make up. Continue reading

Fuck the “Glorious PC Master Race”

A bit of background. The year is 2008 and CD Projekt Red’s humble origins as a video game studio begin with the release of The Witcher. Fans love it, critics love it, and one group of fans in particular rally around the game: PC Gamers. They champion the title as an example of why PC gaming is above all else. But a writer at The Escapist, Ben Croshaw, thought they were being a little “elitist” in this attitude and in his video review of The Witcher uttered the first recorded use of the phrase “Glorious PC-gaming Master Race” (Source). Logan Review

Logan is a superhero drama film released in North America on March 3rd, 2017. It was directed by James Mangold (@mang0ld) and stars Hugh Jackman (@RealHughJackman), Dafne Keen (@DafneKeen) and Patrick Stewart (@SirPatStew).

I grew up on the X-Men movies. My mom would rent each one as it came out and we’d watch it and nerd out over all the cool characters. Eventually, I was old enough to see them in theatres. They became events, my parents and I would see them on release and geek out afterwards the whole way home. I eagerly awaited each one, albeit a little less each time. And after 2016’s disappointing X-Men Apocalypse, I wondered if my love of this series was fading. These were the characters of my childhood- Professor X, Magneto, Storm and of course: Wolverine. These characters were so cool to my 10-year-old brain, so awesome and powerful. But as I grew up, the series didn’t really grow up with me. It floated in the mediocre middle ground of superhero storytelling that relied on flashy characters and drawn out action scenes to carry them rather than meaningful plots and dialogue. Interview with Ukrainian Studio SignSine

I’m always interested in the designers working outside of our North American centered industry. You almost never read about the game development scene outside of America, the US and UK. I don’t think I’ve ever read about the game dev scene in Eastern Europe and especially not the Ukraine. It’s important to understand we’re in a global industry, and in an age of the internet, we can collaborate with and learn from developers across the globe. So when I found the opportunity to talk to SignSine, a Ukrainian game studio working on their first project, I was super thankful. SignSine is making PROZE, an immersive 3D adventure game focused on telling a compelling story “about friendship with massive Cold War conspiracy background” and providing an immersive experience.
