Interview with Totally Rad Swedish Indie Dev DeadToast

Standard

As with most of the awesome game designers I interview, I first saw Victor Agren’s work on Twitter. At the time, I didn’t know his name- his Twitter was simply “DeadToast” which piqued my interest almost as much as his game did. The first clip I saw was from his upcoming side-scrolling action game My Friend Pedro: Blood Bullets Bananas and, well, take a look: Continue reading

Who Won E3 2017?

Standard

Who won E3 2017? This was the question posed to me by my roommate. It’s a question that all the Gamers™ ask around this time of year as the conferences become old news and the convention wraps up. There’s an intense desire to compare the different publishers, aligning ourselves with the team we want to win. The team that made the biggest noises, had the most retweets and showed the best CG trailers. Okay, and maybe some genuinely interesting gameplay trailers. But it’s a desire I never really got. If you ask me who won at the end of E3 2017 I would argue I did. Why? Because there’s dozens of new awesome, beautiful, scary, intriguing and compelling video games coming out in the next year that I can’t wait to play. Continue reading

E3 2017 Predictions

Standard

This is my favourite time of the year. The entire video game industry is gathering in LA this week to announce new games, play new games, get excited about and disappointed about new games… It’s the stuff I live for. I like to watch all the conferences live and of course, make some predictions. Here’s what I got, thanks for reading! Continue reading

Everything Wrong with Dunkey

Standard
Trigger Warning: This article contains sexism, racism, ableism, homophobia, transphobia, mentions (with links to depictions) of physical and sexual abuse, mentions of paedophilia, many slurs.

There’s a YouTuber named Dunkey who’s quite popular, with 3.4 million subscribers and millions of views within days of each new video. He’s famous in the video game community for his brutal takedowns of bad games and his genuine adoration for others. However there’s a thread through his content over the years that anyone who’s tried to honestly critique the video game community can clearly recognize as typical “Gamer” shittiness. Dunkey uses homophobic, ableist, racist and sexist slurs in his videos. He thinks it’s hilarious to beat and murder women in his videos and often screams sexist pejoratives while doing so. As of this writing, he’s never apologized for any of it and continues to make money off it. Continue reading

Prey Preview

Standard

For those unfamiliar with Arkane Studio’s upcoming sci-fi thriller Prey, it’s a reboot of the 2006 game of the same name. This time around things are very different, Arkane is focusing on branching story arcs and multiple endings similar to their other series Dishonored. In fact, a great deal of the game is building upon the successes of last year’s Dishonored 2, both mechanically and visually. This is another step in Arkane Studio’s mission to etch out and master a particular style in the AAA game scene that’s unique to them. Similar to how Naughty Dog has dominated the third-person adventure genre with Uncharted and The Last of Us, Arkane Studios has their sights set on dominating first-person adventures where characters, world-building and player choice drive the experience both with their breakout Dishonored games and now Prey. Nintendo Direct April 2017 Recap

Standard

In the first Nintendo Direct since the launch of Nintendo’s handheld/console hybrid, the Nintendo Switch, there was a great deal of excitement about the future of Nintendo. The Switch is the fastest selling console in Nintendo history and Breath of the Wild has sold over a million units since launch. Things are looking bright for Nintendo, especially after the bleak wasteland that was the last few years of the Wii U. So on April 12th, Nintendo aired a new Direct showcasing not only the future of the Nintendo Switch but their continued support of the Nintendo 3DS. Continue reading
