Prey Preview

Standard

For those unfamiliar with Arkane Studio’s upcoming sci-fi thriller Prey, it’s a reboot of the 2006 game of the same name. This time around things are very different, Arkane is focusing on branching story arcs and multiple endings similar to their other series Dishonored. In fact, a great deal of the game is building upon the successes of last year’s Dishonored 2, both mechanically and visually. This is another step in Arkane Studio’s mission to etch out and master a particular style in the AAA game scene that’s unique to them. Similar to how Naughty Dog has dominated the third-person adventure genre with Uncharted and The Last of Us, Arkane Studios has their sights set on dominating first-person adventures where characters, world-building and player choice drive the experience both with their breakout Dishonored games and now Prey. We Happy Few Preview

Standard
We Happy Few is a survival game released in Early Access for Steam and as a Game Preview for the Xbox One on July 26, 2016. It’s being developed and published by @CompulsionGames and is expected to fully release in 2017. For more info check out their site.

We Happy Few launched on Steam and Xbox One in early access this past week and I was so excited that I dove right in. After their extremely successful Kickstarter campaign, Compulsion Games seems to have gone the Early Access route to not only receive that invaluable player feedback but also help fund the rest of the game’s development. I’ve been fascinated by this title ever since I saw the first trailer last year showcasing the dystopic and peculiar world of Wellington Wells and its denizens. There is something quite beautiful and at the same time terrifyingly disturbing about the world built in We Happy Few and something that begs exploration. So I explored and what I found left me hungry for more. Continue reading

PlayStation E3 2016 Press Conference Recap

Standard

PlayStation returned to the Shrine Auditorium in downtown LA for the first time in several years but not only was there a change venue but there was also a change in style. PlayStation’s conference was a huge step away from the usual press conferences where big wigs in suits discuss sales and price changes, announce new partnerships and entertainment initiatives. Previous PlayStation conferences have talked about TV shows like the PlayStation Plus exclusive show Powers or TV streaming services like PlayStation Vue. But this year PlayStation was all about games. The full conference was incredibly short, running just over an hour, and was all trailers.

The conference was scored by a live orchestra and featured multiple set changes to coincide with the presented game. There was a projection on the floor that Kojima walked across (and appeared to fall off). It was all one big show designed to build hype among fans rather than talk about company plans for investors and press – and it worked. The PlayStation conference was regarded as one of the best E3 conferences in 25 years. The hype made many ignore the fact that very few of the shown games are coming out soon, and many are in fact 2 or even 3 years away. So, if you missed PlayStation’s conference or just want a detailed list of the announcements, then this article is for you. Enjoy! Continue reading

Ubisoft E3 2016 Conference Recap

Standard

Ubisoft celebrates its 30th birthday this year as a company. That’s 30 years of delivering creative, beautiful, imaginative and delightful game experiences. As well as some godawful ones. But hey, nobody is perfect. So this year at E3 Ubisoft came out with some sequels to beloved franchises, some creative new titles (especially for VR) and also some totally new games no one knew about. Unlike competitor’s, Ubisoft’s conference had a very informal tone as developers would come out on stage and sit on the couches and discuss their games with 5th time returning host Aisha Tyler (@aishatyler). So if you missed Ubisoft’s conference or just want a detailed list of the announcements then this list is for you. Enjoy!
